On Thursday 15 November, Chumbe Island Coral Park, Zanzibar was awarded the Green Hotelier of the Year Independent Environmental Award
from the International Hotel and Restaurant Association (IH&RA).
Chumbe Island was selected for this award as it represents an exemplary model to Hoteliers throughout the world seeking to embrace environmentally sound practices whilst maintaining high standards of luxury accommodation. In particular the Chumbe Lodge was praised for its energy management through the environmental architecture and technology incorporated into the stunning eco-bungalows and visitors centre on this island based Marine Park, that also boasts one of the most spectacular coral gardens of the world. The architects responsible for this innovative and ³breathtakingly beautiful² accommodation and infrastructure, namely Professor Per Krusche, Mr Georg Fiebig, and Mr Jan Huelsemann, were singled out for their extraordinary work in advancing the field of environmental architecture and design, and for setting a new precedent for Hoteliers around the world to follow.
This award signifies recognition from the Hotel and Restaurant industry of the importance of incorporating high environmental standards as the tourism industry continues to expand globally and it becomes imperative to address issues of environmentally sound management practices.
Chumbe Island, located in the Indian Ocean, just off shore from mainland Zanzibar island, has been recognised for meeting the goals of the new tourism era. Not only goals that are being increasingly pushed to the forefront by the Hotel industry, but goals that are increasingly recognised, and demanded, by tourists around the world as appreciation of eco-tourism is becoming a predominant force within the market.
This highly prestigious award was accepted by the Chumbe Project Manager, Ms. Eleanor Carter, at a Ceremony held in The Radisson Hotel in London, and was presented by the honourable President of IH&RA, Mr. Ejnar Soder, and Ms. Karen Fletcher, Director of the International Hotels Environment Initiative.
